Chapter 6: Alexanderapolis

Alexanderapolis

Chapter 5

Alexander the great found this city at the edge of Evros River in 334 B.C. later on the citizen of this city
moved to other places. In the 19th century, when Russian conquered this area and rebuilt this city and named
it Alexanderapolis, Now a day Alexanderapolis is the capitol of Evros prefecture.

Six of them sat on parking's steps. Their condition was very bad due to famish and tiredness. Their clothes
were nearly wet. They were smelly and stinky like so many fishes in the basket.

They were looking at each other what they should do now. First of all one of the Bengali, he took off his shoe
and took out dollar underneath the insole. Than malik did the same thing. He took out hundred dollars and
lastly Adam out Yunnani (Greek) currency from his hidden pocket which he had in his underwear. Everyone
got perplexed and surprised. Adam said to everyone, "stay there" and started searching the gas station. After
toil and hard, he found a gas station. He spoke to him in English, bought a telephone card and asked him
where the telephone cabin or box is. After having all the information he came to them. They were lucky that
police hasn't came yet. They weren't as scarred of death as they were scarred of deportation.

First of all Bengalis phoned their person and started waiting for him than maliks phoned their kammiyan da
munda (worker's son) and he said wait for me. The last were Adam and daowd. Daowd phoned his intimate
friend Azam Chan but he refused to do anything for them. He said that i live with someone else, if you would
have been alone, it would have been easy and possible but for two people. It's difficult, just think about it,
food, drinks, place to sleep, all these things. You aren't in Pakistan. Daowd said, but when you came to
Pakistan you said that you come to Yunnan (Greece) than i will take care of everything. I entertained you, you
forgot everything. Anyway, it doesn't matter, maybe i will go back or maybe god will help me but i will
remember this forever. I will never forget. Maybe we will meet one day in our life somewhere. He said this
and disconnected the phone.

Bengalis went with their Bengali brothers and both maliks went with their worker's son but Adam and daowd
were still there. They were cursing their fate. They were taking piss out of maliks and they were at their
destination. It was evening and they hadn't eaten anything. All of sudden they saw a person who had black
hair they thought he might be Pakistani. Daowd said, "asalam-o-alaykum". He didn't reply than daowd said,
"Pakistani" he said Hungary and walked away than another person passes by. This time Adam asked him in
English, "excuse me, do you know any Pakistani around here". He replied in Urdu that i am Pakistani, tell me
how can help you.

Adam and daowd were delighted and happy and related him their story.

He asked them, do you have money and their answer was no.

He said, "You know what you do. You come with me. I live in Salonicco".

Both of them were with him that person knew little bit yunnani (Greek) language. He bought train tickets.
They sat in the train and train's journey started. Their first stop was Kamotini than Xenthia, Kavalla and
Asprovalla respectively. Their stop was salonicco. Both of them said, "Thanks god that we are in safe hands".

That gentleman hired a taxi. They didn't know where they were. The taxi stopped in front of multi stories
building. They came out from the taxi and entered in the building's lift. He took them at the eighth floor. As
soon as they stepped in the flat they heard someone was shouting and up roaring. We have guests. This place
isn't enough for us and this gentleman has brought two new people, like its fowl's house. Due to tiredness,
starvation and distress, bells were ringing in their ears. They were thinking that what kind world is this. They
hadn't had any choice, they had to listen whatever he was saying. The person who brought them said, "Don't
mind whatever he is saying. He is nice at heart. First of all you take shower and here are two tracksuit
pyjamas, wear them. Both of them were astonished. It was like miracle. They were thinking that they must
have done some virtuous thing. They took shower one by one and dinner was ready.

It was three bedrooms flat. Three person were in each room so Adam and daowd their sleeping arrangement
was in television lounge. After dinner all of them started watching Punjabi stage show on video. Adam and
daowd were dead tired; even though it was very noisy they slept. Two 'o'clock in the morning all of them went
into their rooms. Adam woke up for a while and slept again.

Someone switched on the light at seven 'o'clock in the morning and they were hearing voices like someone
was in kitchen. With little break Adam and daowd slept again. When they woke up it was afternoon time. No
one was at home. Everyone was disappear, must have been at work.

Adam and daowd were very happy that they were in Yunnan (Greece). Now they were in Europe. They were
skint; out of money that angelic and virtuous person had brought them in this house from Alexanderapoulis's
parking.

They were talking each other, someone opened the door, and both of them were a little bit abashed. A tall guy
entered in the room. He was the same person who was shouting at them last night. Both were mentally
prepared that he will say something but later on other people started arriving and they got little bit courage.
One of them was who brought them from Alexanderapolis. He called them, "Listen brothers, gujar sahib is
calling you in his room". Both of them entered in his room like they were culprit or guilty.

"Come in, come in. My name is Aslam Gujar".

Adam stepped forward to shake hand with him but he didn't bother to shake hand with him. He was being
confounded and humiliated but this all humiliation, disgrace and indignity, he was feeling inside.

Adam, "Jee my name is Adam Khan Chughtai"

Gujar, "and yours"

Daowd: "Jee Daowd Ansari".

Gujar, "where you from"?

Adam and daowd replied in chorus, "we are from Pindi, means Rawalpindi".

Gujar, "Pindiwall (resident of Rawalpindi) are very cheap. Two other pindiwall stayed with me before you
people and didn't pay rent and food bill. Anyway they can't escape from me. I will trace them if they are in
Yunnan (Greece) than i know how to get my money back".

Chapter 6: Alexanderapolis

Adam didn't know about daowd that how he was feeling but Adam was feeling that someone has placed a
piece of live coal or he has been thrown from a multi story building. He thought that he should give him a curt
reply but kept quite because he thought they came here after having so many difficulties and hardships. So he
should see the last act of this European drama. He didn't realise that these all stages were bringing him out of
dreamland and fairyland and he was slowly and slowly entering in real life. He entered in fact's life from
fiction.

Daowd said instantaneously, "we aren't like them".

Gujar, "you all are same. We have written your name in the diary. We won't charge you two days rent and
food. Next month you will have to pay rent and food bill as well. If you will not find any work than you will
have to give me your home address in Pakistan. My cousin will go there and collect the money. Following are
instructions, you will have to remember.

You shouldn't tell anyone that you newly arrived in Yunnan (Greece) rather you are living in Yunnan
(Greece) from last two years before you were in some other city now you are here to stay with your maternal
aunt's son.

Who ever ask about us, you should have to tell them that we are cousins or brothers each other.

Try your level best that police shouldn't check you. European police don't say anything until unless you
commit any crime of if they find you in suspicious condition or you don't do any naughtiness.

If you want to drink alcohol or smoke you can but with manners and etiquettes and if you want to do
licentiousness or whore mongering you can go to (he mentioned the name of that street) there but you can't
any girl at my place.

Until you don't find any job or work, learn how to cook and clean.

Adam was kneading flour and daowd was chopping onions. They were thinking, this is Europe, everyone
wears shalwar qameez (shalwar is a baggy trouser and qameez is long shirt up to knees in fact qameez word
came from Portuguese language in Urdu. In Italian its called camicia) and talks in Punjabi (Punjabi language
is spoken in Punjab either it's in India or in Pakistan. In India Sikhs and Punjabi write this language in
Gurumukhi script and Pakistani write it in Arabic script). Daowd never spoke any other language other than
Urdu in Pakistan. He hadn't learnt any other language. He had ability to understand Punjabi but whenever he
tried to speak Punjabi everyone laughed at his accent. His Punjabi was ridiculous. They were thinking that
their living standard's graph has fallen down. During one week they had learnt cooking. Neither daowd nor
Adam had any experience of cooking not even making tea. They were thinking that they are getting army
training.

Daowd said to Adam in a pleasantry and irritating mode, "well my dear friend where is your philosophy and
literature".

Adam said, "To be very honest with you, i never realises that life has this version as well".

Daowd said, "my dear, my love, this is Europe. Haven't you seen that Bengalis went with Bengalis and maliks
as well but our Pindiwall, he betrayed and deceived us, you can't say he deceived us but whatever he did,
wasn't nice, despite that when he was in Pakistan. I used to help him quite often. When he came to Europe, he
promised me that whenever you decide to travel, just give me one ring and your servant will be there for you.

Chapter 6: Alexanderapolis

Gujar sahib is right. He must have met with some effeminate or emasculate person. We laugh at others. Make
fun of their accent, at least they take care of their people. Like Gujratis, Sialkoti, Sargodhian etc. Oh Adam i
forgot, i have to phone my family".

Adam said, "I have no one, whom i will phone, who is living there. My dad and until yet he might have been
married. Most probably my father's new wife will be there".

Daowd said, "You shouldn't say that".

Adam replied, "yar (friend) you don't know the reality that how i am suffering. I am passing through agony
but if you say that i phone them".

They came down for telephoning their families. There was a Pakistanis public call office at the street's corner
where you can call on cheap rates.

Daowd wrote the number and gave it to operator and he dialled it swiftly. Daowd was calling his family
exactly after two weeks.

"Hello! Amma (mother) i am daowd".

No one responded from other side. He thought the line has been disconnected so he came out of the cabin and
said to operator to redial the number. Operator redialled the number and passed the line to daowd.

Daowd said, "Hello! Who is this? Abba (father) me, i am daowd".

Yes my son, how are you? Where are you? Your amma (mother) had fit as she heard your voice. My son if
you want, you can comeback. You don't do any hawking business, selling dahi barhay (its yogurt and lumps
of gram flour with spices). You can start some other business of your own choice. If you like we will arrange
your marriage, even with bubbly. I will request my younger brother. I will fall at my brother's feet for your
sake".

Daowd started crying and said, "Abba (father) you don't need to degrade yourself for me. Now i will come
back when i will be something. With your invocations and god's blessing and benediction i am in Yunnan
(Greece). I didn't phone you because i wasn't willing to bother you".

"And what happened with your friend the one who was with you"?

"He is still with me. He is a nice person. I got courage because of him".

"My son i am repeating again, god has given me everything. Don't need to worry about anything, especially
about us, make your future, if it's difficult to stay there, come back. Half chapatti of your own country is better
than two chapattis of foreign country".

Daowd never had lunch or dinner in front of his dad. He never thought of it that the person for whom he used
to think that he is stubborn and miser. He loves him very much.

"Okay abba (father) khuda hafiz (in god's protection). Take care of yourself and amma (mother) and elders. I
will phone you later".

Daowd wiped his tears and came out from the cabin.

Adam gave his number to operator and got connected quickly.
"Hello! Jee, i am Adam. Where is Khaqan sahib"?
"Jee, i am his wife. I call him right now".
It wasn't new thing for Adam. He heard voice from other side, "Jee abbo (yes father) i am calling from

Yunnan (Greece). With your invocations and blessings i am here".
"Putter, (son) make your future. Don't come back. There isn't anything here. You know better than me the

Political situation of Pakistan. These days I am not earning well as well and please send me house rent and
money for other expenses, note down my bank account number".
"Jee fine".
His father didn't ask him, how are you? Where you sleep? What you eat and drink, any problem. Adam

disconnected the phone with anger and grief.

The person who brought them here, he brought another person with him. Adam and daowd were quite but
gujar sahib took his interview in his own style than lectured him than wrote his name in the diary. After
getting rid of gujar sahib that new gentleman came to Adam and daowd.

"Salamaleykum, jee my name is Abdul med (Abdul Hameed)"
Adam and daowd replied together, "wa-aleykum asalam".
"What is your name" (in Urdu for pronoun for respect is aap which is lei, vous in Italian and French

respectively and tum for familiar people like tu in Italian and French) that gentleman used tum instead of aap

which was very strange for daowd and Adam.
Adam and daowd were in a condition of writhe and wriggle because it was their first meeting. He was
younger than them but he was saying tumhara kiya nam hay (what is your name, come ti chiami) rather he
would have said aap ka kiya nam hay (what is your name, come si chiama). Anyway, now they a little bit use
to.

Adam replied first, "jee, my name is Adam khan chughtai".
Daowd said, "And mine is daowd ansari".
Abdul hameed, "are you brother? Are you married? How many kids you have?"
Adam and daowd got baffled of his one after another question. Daowd said in undertone to Adam,"its new

item". Adam's sense of humour strikes his mind.

Adam, "Abdul hameed sahib i have been married. I have three kids. It has been three years that i haven't seen
Pakistan. When i came i had one son and other two were born later on".
Abdul Hameed asked him with curiosity, "how is it possible"?

Chapter 6: Alexanderapolis

Adam, "jee i write them letters sometime and you know god is very kind. It's his blessing".
Abdul hameed, "really, god is great, no doubt about it and daowd sahib are you married"?
Daowd, "my story is more tragic".
Abdul hameed, "how"?
Daowd, "my marriage was a kind of love marriage. I was madly in love with her. I left everything for her, my

mother, father, brothers and sisters. Later on my family accepted my marriage. She got accepted by them.
During this period i got the chance to go to abroad. My beloved, my wife, she developed her relations with my
younger brother and she escaped with him. What about you Abdul Hameed sahib are you married"?

Abdul hameed, "jee, i love someone. I am madly in love with some girl. Would you like to see her photo?
Shall i show you"?

They tried to hide their smile and grin hardly and said, "Show us".
He fished out swiftly the photo of his girl friend from his pocket and showed them. She was really very
beautiful.

Adam said, "Is she short sighted".
Abdul Hameed: "no, not at all".
Daowd: "is she mentally alright".
Abdul hameed: "jee, absolutely very well".
Adam: "than i don't understand".
Abdul hameed didn't get anything.

Adam and daowd got shocked that there was only one tooth brush, one shaving machine and only one towel in
the bathroom. They thought there must have been last person who had used the bathroom and he might have
left or forgot. They spoke to gujar sahib that they need to buy towels, tooth brushes and shaving machines, if
he can give some money as a loan. He said, "There is no need of these things. There is tooth brush in the
bathroom, disposable razor and a towel as well. Everyone use these things, you can use them as well".

Adam said, "Okay".

"And listen there is another thing that tomorrow you will start work. Both of you are lucky that you are here in
summer season. This is the agriculture and flower plucking period. Get yourself ready five 'o'clock in the
morning".

Daowd and Adam didn't have any work experience in Pakistan. They were thinking that what kind of job it
will be. So they asked him in inquisitive tone, "Jee, what is our job"?

Chapter 6: Alexanderapolis

SANYEEN INTERNET

"You will have to join Yunnan's (Greek's) presidency. One will be badshah (king) and other will be wazir
(king's consultant)".

Both said with one voice, "jee, (yes or what)"?

Gujar, "shut this fucking jee. You are here only from few days and you are asking me, what is our job?
Neither you have documents nor have any skill. You don't even know yunnani (Greek) language and you are
asking me what will be our job? I brought you from the road yesterday. I have given you food, shelter and
clothes and now i have found job for you and now you are asking me what we will have to do. This is Europe,
who has documents they can't find work here and you don't even have documents. Now get lost and prepare
dinner for us".

Gujar sahib was absolutely right. Whatever he said was true. His lecture was unpalatable and disgusting but
based upon truth. Both of them had never thought in Pakistan that what is legal and what is illegal. When
identity card was being launched in Pakistan at that time they were very young. Now they got the real
meaning of identity card but millions of Afghans live in Pakistan illegally, without any documents. Srilankans
and Bengalis live in Karachi and other major cities of Pakistan and work there but no one has ever paid any
attention towards them. Chinese have shoe shops in Rawalpindi.

Next day both of them had to go to work. Daowd got job in a factory, where they were making wooden doors
and windows. Adam got job in flowers fields. Adam woke up five 'o' clock in the morning without brushing
his teeth he took tea and accompanied other boys who were going for work in the fields. Abdul Hameed
Khagha was with them as well.

Early in the morning when they arrived in the fields, an old yunnani (Greek) was waiting for them. He called
one of them in yunnani (Greek) language and said, "Have you brought two new workers"?

He responded, "Yes, they are with me. One is called tony and other is called jimmy. He named Adam jimmy
so Adam said swiftly and promptly, "no my name is Adam, Adam Khan Chughtai".

The boy who introduced him, he didn't like because it was his first day and he interrupted him. He doesn't
know the language either. Abdul Hameed Khagha, for him it was okay, didn't make any difference.

Every one took wheel barrow each. Following the instruction of old man, they started walking in flowers beds
and started plucking flowers. Flowers bed was that long that it took an hour in one flower bed. Adam never
had any experience of this kind of work. He was in trouble but the pain he had after phoning, this pain was
less than that. This was physical pain which was healable after some rest or sleep but the other one damages,
injured his soul. It wasn't healable.

Midday exactly at 12 'o' clock when they finished their work, Adam felt that his lower part of body isn't
functioning something like that has been paralysed. He was working in the fields in a bending position. It was
very hot now. Adam got sweated very badly. Adam desired to have a cup of tea but in these fields how it
would have been possible to have a cup of tea.

Adam, Hameed and Hussein, thrice of them had brought the leftover of last nigh salan (curry) and chapattis.
They opened the plastic box. Salan (curry) was cold and due to moister the chapattis were wet but they were
starving very badly. They didn't bother and started eating. During lunch Hussein said, "Adam what you did
wasn't nice. I was telling him your names and you spoke in the middle and told him your name in English".

Chapter 6: Alexanderapolis

Adam got shocked that he was calling everyone aap (in Urdu aap pronoun is like vous and lei in French and
Italian respectively) and everyone was using tum (in Urdu tum pronoun is like tu in French and Italian) for
him that wasn't nice. He didn't like it. Anyhow he kept quite.

Hussein spoke again, "it has been only one week that you are here. Neither you have document nor did you
have any place to sleep. You should have been thankful to gujar sahib that he has given you shelter otherwise
you would have been cooped by the police. I thought i should send you back but i thought about gujar sahib
because i brought you here because of him. Adam's morsels were choking in his throat like he will spit them
out. Adam thought a lot that he shouldn't respond him and this parley finish without any unpleasant end but
Hussein was still shouting. Khagha was busy in eating and Adam was listening but at last he didn't stop
himself and said, "Husain sahib, i am very sorry that i interrupted you. I shouldn't have said anything but i
don't like names of dogs and cats like Jimmy and Tony". Khagha was trying to appease him, "Adam, please
keep quite. We will lose the job".

Hussein spoke again, "fine you don't like the names of cats and dogs but yunnani (Greeks) can't pronounce
Pakistani names and they can't remember them".

Adam responded him again, "So it means that we change our names, lose our identity. It means that we have
inferiority complex. This is exactly like that that Christians in Pakistan, they call themselves Yaqub and
Pervez instead of Jacob and Parvick".

Hussein spoke again, "jee, you argue and squabble too much because you are new here. If you are proud of
your country and name than why you left Pakistan, here, it's like that and it doesn't make any difference. You
don't even have documents. When you will have them, i don't know what will happen than".

"Hussein sahib, i will be same if i have left Pakistan due to certain reasons. It doesn't mean that i change my
name to keep my yunnani (Greek) boss happy or not to lose the job. If he wants me to work for him, he has to
learn my name. If i will change my name today, maybe one day i will change something else. We people are
economically week but we aren't week in modesty and prestige".

"I will see how long you will keep your modesty and prestige. Your patriotism will be ended, when you will
go to Pakistani embassy to make your passport. They will treat you like a shit. They will reprove you very
badly then you will realise.

Adam had to go to work every day, sometime he had Sunday off on the contrary daowd used to have every
Sunday off.

In the beginning Adam's feet used to swell up and body used to ache but slowly and gradually he got used to
it. On the other hand daowd was in awful condition. Where he was working they used to make wooden doors
and windows. His hands were injured and wounded by driving planer but both of them were persevering and
persistent. They didn't lose heart. If they had Sunday off sometime, they used to visit salonnico city.

Salonicco real name is Thessalonica. Its foundation stone was laid by Macedonian general Kesandro. After his
wife's name Thessalonica in 315 B.C. this city was called Thessalonica.

It's divided into two parts, upper city and lower city. Lower city has big square called Platià Aristotelous that
square goes up to Leofòros Nikis road than river starts. There are loads of bars and expensive restaurants on

Chapter 6: Alexanderapolis

SANYEEN INTERNET

this road because it's along the river. There is Agia Sofia church as well over here. In the lower city there is a
mosque which is called Hamza Bedazami. This is the biggest mosque of Salonicco.

Upper city has Agios Dimitrios church. Apart from that there are other places. Like Dodeka Apostolic, Agia
Ekaterina.

In lower city on Leofòros Nikis road if you keep on walking on that road which is along the river than you
will see a white tower. In yunnani (Greek) language it's called Torre Bianca or Lefkos Pyrgos.

Adam was concentrated on Salonnico's map and he was reading the history of Salonicco city on that
pamphlet. He got perplexed that there is agia Sofia in Salonicco as well but the most interesting thing he
found in the pamphlet was white tower. He requested daowd let's go to see that white tower.

Daowd said, "There must be ticket to see that".

Adam said, "We will see it from outside".

Then they started walking on the Leofòros Nikis road. When they arrived close to the tower, it was not that
attractive as it was in the pamphlet. In reality it wasn't that beautiful. Daowd said to Adam, "why don't we
drink something"?

"What about coffee but keep in mind, the chair you see outside the bar, we aren't sitting there. These are for
tourists who come from France, Germany, America or Japan. Here coffee costs less but these chairs costs
more. I had this experience in turkey. Anyhow as you say that that we people are here for labour work, we are
here to earn and save money not to live voluptuous life".

Adam entered in a small bar. He ordered in English, disposable coffee for himself and beer for daowd.
Barman gave him coffee and beer swiftly and speedily, just to get rid of him. Adam gave him different notes
of drachma because he wasn't well aware of yunnani (Greek) currency. Bar was at tourist place so they were
used to. Barman took the right money and gave him the rest.

They came in the park, carrying their beer and coffee. They were gay and grumpy as well. They were happy
and gay because they were in Europe and they were grumpy and sad because what they were thinking about
Europe. It wasn't like that. It was beyond their imaginations after coming here Adam thought about
W.H.Auden's poem, "Refugee's Blue".

"Say this city has ten million souls

Some are living in mansions

Some are living in holes

Yet there is no place for us my dear,

Yet there is no place for us"

W. H .Auden
If you don't have any passport or any identity card, it means that you do not exist in this world even though
you exist and you are alive. Auden wrote this poem for Jews but not even Jews rather any person who has
economic, social or political problems even if he is Jew, Muslim, and Christian or belongs to any cast and

SANYEEN INTERNET

creed. He is miserable and pitiable. We should feel pity and mercy for him. This poem is for him. The one
who exists but due to certain reasons he doesn't exist but he exists. His existence, William Shakespeare gave
him a name to be that's why William Shakespeare's hero hamlet says that,

To be or not to be that is the question".

That has been discussed French existentialist Jean Paul Sartre later on "etre et rien" to be or nothing. Famous
yunnani (Greek) philosopher, the teacher of Alexander the great, Aristotle says that, "the best lot is not to be".
Hinduism gave this idea before Aristotle that, "Ajanma, Anant and Akal". Which means never born, no end,
timelessness. That's why Sikhs say that, "sat shri akal" which means the truth is timelessness. At this point
philosophy and physics meets together. Physics talks about "time and space talks about waves, oscillations
and particles. If we are passing through time than time should be there, if our existence is important, necessary
than our birth is important, if our birth is important than the person who came in to being, born, there should
be some end of that person. I think it's better to be instead of not to be. Not to be is cowardliness. There is
much more enjoyment and fun in "to be" instead of "not to be", When you are than there are problems with
you and happiness as well.

The hardships which they had, they were suffering physically and spiritually, internally or externally, morally
or socially. These were because of "to be" and there will be. How he could have explain to everyone, "
actually which is to be that isn't that, to be that, that it is rather in fact that is, that to be, that, it isn't.

It was difficult for him to explain the philosophical theories of Martin Heidegger and Soren Kierkegaard to
everyone. He was plucking and collecting flowers in the fields in Yunnan (Greek) and in Pakistan he was in
the final year of philosophy. There wasn't any comparison in fields and philosophy but he knew that very well
that "to be" is better than "not to be" that's why he was suffering. He was suffering because of "to be".

Daowd, shake Adam rudely, "what you were thinking".

"No! Nothing, I had been into philosophical world. Since i am here, I forgot reading, writing and studying.
And what you were doing?"

"I was watching that gori (any European or white girl). Her legs were open and i was watching her panties. I
was starring at her continuously so she closed her legs. Yar (friend) Adam these maims (must be originated
from madam and mam means gori) legs are very smooth and soft and there tits are bouncy and full of life".

Adam said, "I think daowd you got drunk after having one beer".

Adam was guilty conscience because of daowd. She must have been thinking very bad about them that how
pervert we are. He knew that, it's not how you see someone. It's the way you see. If you are having fun and
looking at her even if you pass some comments that you are very sexy. She will accept this as compliment. It's
not what you say; it's the way you say. Even if you are pervert and you have hungry eyes but she wouldn't
mind.

Adam addressed daowd, "you shouldn't have done like this the way you did. She must have been thinking
very wrong about us.

You know when we go from one mohallah (small alley) to another mohallah. We represent our mohallah.
When we go from our city to another city we represent our city. If we go from our province to another
province, we represent our province. When we go from our country to another country we are the ambassador
of our country. Similarly we represent our continent as well, so ambassador of our mohallah, city, province,
country and continent. So our little mistake not even defames our country and continent rather we disrepute

Chapter 6: Alexanderapolis

our religion and nation as well. That's how we become ignominious and notorious in foreign countries. Now if
she will come to know that we are Pakistani, Muslim and Asian. So it will not even shame for Pakistan even
ignominy for Asians as well".

His lecture hasn't affected daowd because he was still a bit tipsy. Adam couldn't stop himself and he walked
down towards that lady,
"Hello! Hi i just came to say sorry to you because my friend is a bit tipsy and he was starring at you".
Lady, "no...No...It's okay".
Adam, "are you from England or?"
Lady, "no, i am German".
Adam, "what are you doing in Greece? Are you tourist?"

Lady, "no i am cognitive scientist".
Adam, "i am sorry, i should have told you my name. My name is Adam Khan Chughtai and i am from
Pakistan and yours"?

Lady, "my name is Friedrich Hiezerlich. What are you doing here, tourist or student?"
Adam, "i am studying philosophy. I am in the final year. I had the passion for Greeks philosophers, so i am
here". Adam knew that he was lying but he was studying philosophy and philosophy is based upon Greek

philosophers, that's why he had enthusiasm and passionate feeling for them, so it was half truth and half
fabrication,. This half lie and falsehood was killing him.
Friedrich, "what are you thinking".
Adam, "Nothing, I was just thinking what is cognitive science"?
Friedrich, "it concerns with wisdom and knowledge. Basically i am philologist but i am specialising in

cognitive science.
Adam, "what is the job of philologist and cognitive scientist"?
Friedrich, "basically my research was based upon oriental languages. As you know that Indo-European and

indo-Aryan languages has same roots.
For example there are two words murder and assassin.
Both have same meaning but philologically etymologically they have different meanings and origins.
Murder: it is an old English word morthor and old French mordre and now its called murder which means

killing someone unlawfully.
Assassin: it's Arabic word hashish. It came to French language as hashishins and from French it came to
English assassin. This means when you kill someone politically, religiously or any important or known
person. Like john f. Kennedy. It wasn't murder it was assassin.

Now i will tell you about hashishins.

When Hassan Bin Sabah the one who gave renaissance to firqa bataniya (Ishmaelites). He started giving
hashish to his slaves. Lately they became his workers or you rather say soldiers. These soldiers, hashishins
used to kill celebrities like Christian and Muslim leaders who were against them. They assassinated Nizam ul
Mulk Tusi, the governor of Tus and they were also willing to assassinate Omar Khayyam but they didn't do it.
You know that Hassan Bin Sabah, Nizam Ul Mulk Tusi and Omar Khayyam, thrice of them were the student
of Imam Wasique. There are many examples of etymology and philology. Doing research about them is called
cognitive science. This means science of wisdom and knowledge. My concerns are phonetics, linguistics,
languages pidgins and creoles".

Adam, "you have immense knowledge about languages. I think philology and etymology are very interesting
subjects".

Friedrich, "you are very right. The more you learn the more you want to know because curiosity is the father
of knowledge".

Adam, "how long you will stay here"?

Friedrich, "actually i am doing research at the original script of bible because it was originally written in
Amharic than in Hebrew respectively in Greek, Latin, French and English. The most authentic translation of
bible in English was written in the 15th century. I did languages in university like Hebrew, German and Latin.
German is my mother tongue. I found it an interesting task. After Greece i will go to Russia and then to Israel.
Because some old script of the bible are in the Russian museum and one copy of bible is in the British
museum (London). Let's see i will be able to the true and original text of the bible or not".

Adam, "can you recommend me some good book about languages and philology".

Friedrich, "Why not, Steven pinker's the language instinct. It's a very good book".

Adam gave her a pen and a piece of paper.

"Could you please write it down"?

Friedrich: "Sure why not".

She wrote down the name of the book for Adam. In the mean time daowd came closer to them. Adam
introduced him, "he is daowd, my friend. I am extremely sorry about his attitude".

Friedrich: "no, no Mr. Adam, its ok. I have been to Iran, Turkey and some African countries. I am used too.
It's only the difference of culture".

Adam, "this is my address. I don't have any telephone number but if you fancy eating some exotic, spicy and
heavy food. You are most well come".

Friedrich Hierzlich, she put his address in her purse and said, "Thank you".

Adam, "we must go now friedrich because we are out since morning".

Both of them shake hand with her but daowd was feeling shame and embarrassment.

Aslam Gujar received both of them and said, "Here they are shehzaday (plural of shehzaday means prince).
Where have you been? Have you been for the picnic?"

"Jee, we went for sightseeing of salonicco. We thought today is our day off. So let's picnic and make an
excursion of the city. Weather was nice as well".

Aslam gujar said, "O! Acha jee...... went for the picnic". He spoke with stentorian voice, "tell me the truth,
you really have been somewhere for picnic or you were searching for some agent. I am living here since long.
I know the score. I have seen many like you, they come and go. Don't you remember that i brought you from
the road and now you are coming up"?

Adam and daowd didn't respond him because he did favour for them. They were under his debt of gratitude
and obligation. They had little bit fear too.

All boys who were living with them had different mentalities.

Other boys used to wear shalwar qameez at home and used to listen to Maratib Ali, Mansoor Malangi and
Atta Ullah Khan Esa Khelwi (local and folk singer of Pakistan). House was decorated with quranic verses. All
of them when they had day off they used to play cards (poker). Gambling, watching Indian movies and
Punjabi stage programmes and above all enjoying Punjabi video songs. On contrary Adam didn't like any of
these things and daowd too. Adam's favourite music was ghazals and specially those who had poetical touch
and he used to listen to English songs as well.

For both of them this environment was strange, weird and bizarre. It was beyond their imaginations. People
think that European culture is different from Asians culture but for them their own culture which they had in
their house was stranger than European culture but they were tolerating everything just because of this that
maybe this what they call Europe.

There was one change in the wash room. There were three tooth brushes and shaving machines and towels.
Everyone took piss out of them that they are spendthrift and prodigal. Aslam gujar insulted and humiliated
them many times like he did first time but then they used to come to the normal position. Now they were
habitual and get used to it.

One of their flat mates was very bizarre and weird. Mohammad Nawaz. He had only one pair of trousers of
khaki colour and had pair of black long army boots. He used to wear that khaki trouser and boots at work and
at home as well. Every Sunday he used to wash his trouser and clean his boots and he used to wrap or cover
himself with bed sheet. After washing and drying he used to wear it again. Adam and daowd never spoke to
him due to fear because they didn't know the language didn't have documents above all they were from
Rawalpindi and none of their flatmate was from Rawalpindi.

They heard about Mohammad Nawaz that he was non commissioned officer in Pakistan army. After
completing his fifteen year's service in the army he got retirement and started cultivated his land which he had
in his village. Then he paid money to agent and came to Yunnan (Greece) via turkey. His trouser and boots
used to revive the memories of those days when he was in the army. Whatever he used to earn, he used to
send his family. He had four kids. One daughter was adult. He was saving money for her dowry. Other was
still young, school going.

One day incidentally Adam encountered Mohammad Nawaz. Adam asked him, "Nawaz sahib, can i ask you
one thing if you don't mind".

Nawaz said, "why not bao (gentleman)".

Adam, "i am observing and seeing you from last many months that you wear this same trouser and same pair
of shoes. You have job, you earn money. Why can't you buy another pair of trousers and new shoes or boots"?

"Adam bao (gentleman) you aren't married yet. You don't have wife and kids, when you will be married,
when you will have wife and kids than i will ask you. I always think about my kid's better future. The only
money i spend in Europe in for food and house rent. I can't stop myself spending money on food other than
that i do as much saving as i can. Insha'Allah, (with the will of god) if my god will help me i will buy house
than i will save some money and i will start some small business. My greatest wish is that that my kids should
go for higher studies. Adam bao (gentleman) you can't dream about it that how amazing and good you feel
when you suffer and face hardship for bringing up your kids. Even if i need to beg for my kids i will do it or
even if i have to become hawker, i won't mind. After marriage the most precious thing in your life is, your
kids. You love them more than anything".

Adam found Mohammad Nawaz, an interesting person than he started thinking that he is son of someone but
he hasn't have affection and love in his life.

Adam asked him, "What you were in Pakistan".

Nawaz answered him, "Adam bao (gentleman) i was in Pakistan army. I have completed my service. I started
cultivating my fields than via turkey i came to Yunnan (Greece)".

Adam asked him, "Why you took retirement too early. You could have extended your service".

"Adam bao (gentleman) don't ask me". Nawaz said, "Do you know in Pakistan what the difference between
commissioned and non commissioned officer is? When goras (white means English) were in India, they used
to recruit Indian as N.C.O. (non commissioned officer). None of Hindustani got promotion above subedar (an
army rank for junior commissioned officers or n.c.o.) even though if he was better than goras (white means
English) in qualities. When they needed non commissioned officers, they selected from all around the
indo-pak subcontinent. In the first and second world war Indians were being used as fodder and bait. Our
ancestors and forefathers, they fought for goras (white) that these goras will not harm Khalifat-e-Usmania
(Ottoman Empire). They betrayed Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims. In those days there was charm in British
army's job, even if you were non commissioned officer. They used to provide you basic needs and if you are
loyal to goras you were able to sort out many problems. These feudal lords you see in Punjab. All were being
favoured by goras. Not even Punjabis, Sindhis Baluchis and Pathans as well. When i reached at the age of
discretion, I joined Pakistan army. I wasn't well educated but i had robust physique so i passed all the stages
but when i started training than i realised that what is the difference between non commissioned officer and
commissioned officer. If you are dog you will have respect but if you are non commissioned officer than you
won't have respect. In Pakistan army they humiliate you very badly just to kill your ego but they abased,
degrade and mock us like a shit. Goras has given us very well knitted and concordant system. We will not be
able to come out of it in thousand years. You know bao Adam i saved my respect otherwise it's very difficult
to secure and save your respect and honour. The officers who don't have beautiful wives they don't get
promotion above major's rank or the one who doesn't join their cocktail parties or hesitate to join them. Before
partition there were some sycophancy and wheedling people, rather traitor and perfidious. They were being
favoured by goras so their kids got training in Sandhurst academy of England. When Pakistan came into
being, these trained people who had the reign of Pakistan army. So you can say that white goras were
substituted by black goras. Because of politicians and Pakistan army's personal grudges ninety thousand army

men surrendered in Bangladesh? When we were losing Bangladesh, Pakistan army's general was enjoying
himself with someone at hill station. When he was being told that we are losing half of our country, he said,
"Don't disturb me. Just surrender".

When Aslam Gujar humiliates you, it must be unpleasant and disagreeable but the way they humiliate and
abased non commissioned officer in Pakistan army you can't even imagine. If you see that you will prefer to
die.

I laugh sometime that why Pakistan is called Islamic Jamhoria Pakistan (Islamic democratic Pakistan) because
neither we have proper implementation of Islam and Islamic Shariya (law) and nor we have democracy. If
they wanted to do this, what they did. Then there was no need of two separate homelands. There was no need
of ideology of Pakistan; two nation's theory or ideology".

Adam was being struck dumb because of Nawaz's lecture that this khaki trousers man is keeping so many
secrets.

"Bao Adam, how you came here"?

"Jee, i was completing my masters in Pakistan. I didn't complete my education and came here."

Nawaz got gashed after hearing that, "bao after having master's degree you could have found some decent job.
What are you doing here? This environment must be very strange for you. Maybe you don't like it what i will
say but in our village only those people go to foreign countries for work who don't like to study and don't
learn any skill. Their parents pay money to agents and send them to these countries. Before European
countries, people had trend to go to Middle Eastern countries. Now they prefer European countries. There is
only one difference between European and Middle Eastern countries. In Europe people usually or mostly
come on visa or illegally than make papers but in middle eastern countries mostly they go and live there
legally. So in Arab countries you can come and go but in European countries once you are in. You can't go
back without paper. You can but no one wants to go back without papers. They spend a lot of money to come
here, until unless they deport them. If you want to live here permanently, marry with some gori (feminine of
gora means white) or apply for political asylum, because i am sure that yunnani (Greek) government will not
open immigration. Maybe Italy will. They opened immigration in 1990 and legalized many people. I heard
from someone that perhaps they will open immigration".

Adam said, "How we will go there"?

Nawaz said, "How you came to Yunnan (greek) from turkey. Agent will take you there".

Adam asked, "Nawaz sahib, if Italy will open immigration. Will you go to Italy as well"?

"No bao Adam, i will not. I will work in Yunnan (Greece) for three or four years than i will go back to
Pakistan. Before i was in army, so it has been ages that i am roaming about here and there. Now i want to
spend some time with my parents, wife and kids".

Adam kept on working in fields and Daowd was still working in factory. Now, financially they were bit
better. During this period Aslam gujar never missed any chance to degrade and humiliate them. He just
needed an excuse. Now they were habitual and get used to it. If didn't said anything, this was strange.

Adam and daowd were waiting that when Italy will open immigration. So they will go there with some agent
by dunkey because in Yunnan (Greece) there was no chance of paper marriage and they sort out political
asylum case in six months. For them it was better to stay illegally because when you apply for political stay
they take your finger prints. So you can't apply for papers or political stay in other European countries. They
trace through finger prints.

If they will be copped you during dunkey in yunnani (Greek's) territory, they will have option to apply for
asylum and if they will be copped in Italy. They will have option to apply for political asylum.

Daowd used to send money to his family once in a blue moon but Adam had to send money every month.
Now Adam was thinking if Italy will open immigration than he will need at least one thousand dollars than
some money to stay in Italy. Then he stopped thinking about this because immigration wasn't open yet.

One day by mistake Adam asked Aslam Gujar what is the procedure of paper marriage than Aslam Gujar
insulted him very badly. He was being reproved very badly. "He is here from six or seven months and look at
his efficiency. We have been living here last many years and we don't know these tricks. Look at them. It
costs money puttar (son) and you know if something will happen during the marriage than you will not be to
stay in Yunnan (Greece) and money which you will pay. You will lose it as well".

In fact Adam didn't know what paper marriage is.

Aslam gujar again started shouting with a little pause, "and for that you need at least one girl. You can't speak
yunnani (Greek) language. Then you need unmarried certificate, birth certificate and above all you need an
address. Maybe you will arrange everything but domicile (home address) in very difficult. You can't arrange.
No one will allow you to use his address. At least i won't give you".

Mohammad Nawaz interfered and said, "Aslam sahib he just asked you. He hasn't brought any girl with him".

Aslam gujar roared again, "you just shut up, you fauji (army man)".

Mohammad Nawaz would have beat him up very badly if he wanted but he hasn't said even a single word to
Aslam Gujar after that. Mohammad Nawaz thought of his kids, wife and family so kept quite.

Adam never understood one thing that whenever they talked about immigration or about documents. Aslam
gujar didn't like it.

Today, one again Aslam Gujar decided to entertain himself. He planned and prepared the programme. He was
consulting and counselling with his friends. They were in a mode of voluptuousness. He didn't know that
Adam was listening. He heard, Aslam Gujar was saying something like that,

"Yar (friends) don't you know that Selma of Uzbekistan she is beautiful. Bring her today and two bottles of
black label".

One of his friend asked Aslam, "yar, why are you so oppressive and rigid. You treat all the boys harshly".

He said, "You don't know the reality. I have contacts with Turkish and Italian agents. When Turkish agents
leave there people somewhere in the parking or parks, I send someone to bring them here. Than i find them
jobs. Like that they earn for themselves and for me as well. This flat where we live, bank has paid its
mortgage. When they have work, they earn money, pay the rent and food bills. So i pay my instalments. I save
money as well. If i treat them nicely or be lenient with them than they will rise against me, couple of guys got
Italians documents and now they phone me and threat me and one boy was from Rawalpindi. He got married
with yunnani (Greek) girl. He has yunnani (Greek) pass port. He has conceit and vanity of being yunnani
(Greek) although when i gave him shelter, brought him here. He hadn't have food for three days. When he left
my flat didn't pay the rent and food bill. Everything is written in my dairy. I can't sue him because legally i
can't rent out even a single room. By the way if Italy will open immigration than i will arrange their agent for
their dunkey. Agents will give me my commission. That's why shehzadayo (lot of prince) i have bought plaza
in Pakistan. Otherwise the money we earn in Europe with that can eat, drink, pay taxes to goras (white) and
don't save anything.
